RITA STREICH - The Viennese Nightingale
- Somewhat akin to our recent major retrospectives of Fricsay and Markevitch, the present 8-CD box offers a comprehensive survey of "the Viennese nightingale"'s recordings for DG.
- The set includes her complete DG lieder recordings from Mozart to Milhaud, taking in popular Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Wolf and Strauss, and ending with a delightful Liederabend that includes some folksongs.
- Also, an extensive selection of Streich's opera and operetta highlights, excluding only the material that is already on Originals, and the Original Masters Christams Album and The Singles. Here, for the first time on CD, is the complete Bastien und Bastienne, as well as many other rarities (including previously unreleased Donizetti: the Tirolienne from La Fille du Regiment). The range is huge, the voice a joy to hear.
- Basis of the set was a 10-CD Japanes box from the early 1990s, which has now been compressed onto 8 CDs, with (somehow) as much as two CDs of new material added!
- The CD booklet includes rare memorabilia in the form of photo-reproductions of Rita Streich's own original copies of arias, with the artist's annotations of the music sung and her own written-out cadenzas, plus a page of her copy of the libretto of Bastien und Bastienne, decorated and annotated by the artist personally.
